US rejects international resolution to fight violence against women

The U.S. has rejected a UN resolution aimed at preventing violence against women because it included language on access to safe abortions. The resolution expressed “outrage at the persistence and pervasiveness of all forms of violence against women and girls worldwide” and called on countries to take immediate steps to prevent gender-based violence and discrimination.

Fighting violence against women with better data in the Asia-Pacific

Violence against women has taken some particularly vicious forms in Asia and the Pacific the last few years, with headlines including acid attacks, gang rapes and honor killings. Recently, a new program has joined the fight against gender-based violence in a most supportive role – strengthening the region’s capacity to collect better data using better methods for better policies.
